Stephen Hui Geological Museum

The Stephen Hui Geological Museum is a museum at The University of Hong Kong. It is located on the ground and first floors of the James Hsioung Lee Building, in the HKU Main Campus. The museum is part of the Department of Earth Sciences, the only earth sciences department in Hong Kong.


The Stephen Hui Geological Museum was opened on January 16, 2009 as the first and only geological museum in Hong Kong.

The Musuem features ores, minerals and rocks from mines all over the world, including mines from Hong Kong.
Interesting rocks mined from Hong Kong includes:
Galena, Quartz, leaf fossils, etc.

POUR CO2 gas to extinguish fire!

Carbon dioxide is a gas that we interact with every day. For instance, CO2 enables plants to perform photosynthesis, you exhale CO2 when you breathe, and CO2 can extinguish fire. You probably knew all those facts, but did you know that you can get really science-y and extremely creative when putting out flames with CO2? It's as simple as pouring the gas onto fire. Pouring? You better try it to believe it!!

Materials:

• White vinegar
• Baking soda
• Clear container
• Candle(s)
• Lighter or matches

EXPERIMENT:

1. Pour some baking soda into a clear beaker or glass.
2. Add some vinegar into the mix by pouring white vinegar into the same container as the baking soda. Whoa… that's a foamy reaction!
3. Wait a few moments while the reaction tapers off.
4. Use a lighter or matches to ignite the candle(s).
5. Grab the container with what used to be vinegar and baking soda and slowly "pour" the air from the container over the candles. Be careful not to pour the liquid!

As you move the container from candle to candle as you pour the air out, the flames will extinguish. SERIOUSLY!

Every winter in the western north Pacific, in the region around Japan, extratropical cyclones form and zoom to east making landfall over eastern Canada.A separate study in the Northern Hemisphere suggests that approximately 234 significant extratropical cyclones form each winter. Extratropical cyclones form.

Typhoon Roke's Von-Karman Vortices

Typhoon Roke caused some Von-Karman Vortices to form over the southern sea of Jeju-do island,south korea.
Von Karman vortices are caused by a object which is above a flow of fluid that includes air, blocks a current and causes vortices in the opposite facing side of the object.A Mountain must be higher than 1300 meters which is sometimes above the flow of air currents before it could cause this vortcies.In this image, you can see the north west part of Typhoon Roke and winds from this part of the typhoon move south, which cause Von Karman vortcies  south of Jeju-do island.

Cyclones that are Totally exposed:Tropical Depression 13w

Cyclones often have exposed centers, but some rare cyclones like TD 13w, are totally exposed-including the center and the sides!!!This happen because the circulation is too low level and upper wind shears are high.

History:On August 4, a Large Tropical Wave developed near the island of Micronesia,and move west, were it separated into two Tropical Waves,and one of the Tropical Wave move towards Guam,and developed a Low level Circulation.Late on August 8, the JMA upgraded a low pressure area to a tropical depression west of Guam, and the JTWC issued a TCFA.On August 10, the 13w's circulation center was exposed due to a High pressure nearby.But soon the center wasn't exposed due to lower wind shears on August 12,and soon it produced large thunderstorms.The system was soon caught in a Cold front and dissipated completely on August 15

The many "cides" of modern food production(comic)

When it comes to modern food production, there are many "cides" to the story. You can't even talk about food production without hearing lots of different "cides" such as pesticides, fungicides, insecticides and herbicides. I thought we'd add another cide to the story and include genocide.
The word suffix "cide" means something is being killed, by the way. "Pesti-cide" means something that kills pests. "Fungi-cide" means something that kills fungus. "Herbi-cide" means something that kills plants (herbs). Similarly, "Geno-cide" loosely means killing a targeted group of people, usually for some evil purpose of control, profit or cultural extermination.

Looking for a quick and easy way to pollute the environment and destroys huge populations of fish and ocean creatures? It's simple: Just take more pharmaceuticals and urinate!
Prescription drugs are now used in such large numbers that they have become an environmental hazard. When you take drugs, they aren't simply "used up" by the body; they pass through and get funneled into water treatment systems. The bad news is that water treatment facilities don't remove pharmaceuticals, so they get flushed downstream where they destroy aquatic ecosystems while contaminating the water supplies of farms and cities that happen to be downstream.
There's actually Prozac in the public water supply! (Perhaps municipal water companies will now be charged with practicing medicine without a license for distributing prescription drugs to citizens without a prescription...)

Huh? What environmental problem?

Drug companies try to pretend this problem doesn't exist, and the mainstream media has largely ignored it, too. Meanwhile, fish are being born with double sets of reproductive organs, and fish infertility rates are skyrocketing. The humans who eat those fish are, likewise, expressing unprecedented rates of hormone-related health disorders such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, infertility and much more.Those disease, in turn, get treated with yet more prescription drugs! Then those drugs are urinated back into the groundwater supply where the density of synthetic chemicals continues to increase. Sound insane? It is.
Today, the fish are mutants. Tomorrow, it will be the human population. The widespread abuse and marketing of pharmaceuticals is threatening the health of not just today's ecosytems, but the health of humans, too.
